I know its been a while...

since I posted. What can I say? Life has thrown me some kind of curve ball. Things in my life have changed drastically. I had to take some time to focus on my family. However, I have readjusted and I'm ready to return to my first love...sewing. This year I have decided not to spend any money on summer clothing. Because school's out (yeah!, I am just as happy as the kids), I have loads of time and I'm planning on making a few basic items. The list consists of the following:

1. Maxi dress

2. Wrap jersey dress

3. Mini dress with pockets

4. Cropped metallic jacket

5. Denim dress (not sure about the style)

I also plan to sew a mini wardrobe for baby girl, which consists of two or three sundresses, a denim skirt, a knit jacket and cargo pant ensemble. In addition to this, there are a few purses I wanted to create. Hopefully, there will be time left in the summer for this coat that was supposed to be sewn last fall. This should keep me busy!

I will post pictures soon, In the meanwhile watch this...I just LOVE them!

Peace,
K

No Clothing Pictures Yet But...

This is what I've been doing over the weekend.

I made pictures pillows for my two sons, my daughter and one for myself. This is a really easy project and it only takes about an hour-start to finish. My coworker showed me how to make these pillows, but you can find the instructions here. I decided this project would be a good project for my beginning sewing class, but I needed to try it out first. More examples:

Ms. Do-It-All (NOT!!)

As you can see, it has been a while since my last post. I have been extremely busy managing work, family, etc. To respond to your question Mrs. C. Alexander, I serve quick and easy meals, grade papers at work (or sometimes while in bed), and sew everyday (even if its just adding a buttonhole). For me, sewing is more than making clothes, its my AIR! I have to do something creative everyday or I can't breathe!!! It takes about a week to make a complete garment, sometimes longer. I do a little sewing everyday. I usually break down my project as follows:

Friday Evening: Cut out fabric and transfer marking (all while watching What Not To Wear, my favorite show)
Saturday: I spend Saturday mornings cleaning and doing laundry. In the afternoon, I sew.
Sunday: I can find about an hour on so to sew something.

Monday-Thursday: I can spend anywhere from one to two hours a day to work on a project.

Friday: The process starts again.

I am never in a rush to finish a project, I just keep working on until its done. It helps that my children are not babies anymore and they are very independent. Also, I finally trained my husband to do some housework and that helps a lot!

Although I haven't posted in a while, I've been sewing. I have a few projects to share with you, check back soon. Here is a sneak peek:

See Ya Soon,

Back to Work

Oh well, the winter break is now over and I have to return to work tomorrow. Back to lesson plans and grading assignments. I really enjoy what I do but it can be exhausting! I get up every morning at 5am to be in my classroom by 6:45am. If you haven't guessed it, I am a teacher. I teach Family and Consumer Sciences on the high school level. That's home economics for you old school people. I specialized in apparel and interior design.

That's me (on the right) helping one of my students with layout and cutting.

Although I teach sewing, I do not consider myself an expert seamstress. I am more like an intermediate sewer. Sewing, like many other disciplines, is an on going study-you can't possible know all the techniques. I am constantly learning and when I find something that works, I teach it to my students. I hope to become an expert someday but until then I'll just keep learning.

The Season of Coats (or Jackets)

For some reason, I am obsessed with coats. I have been making either coats or jackets for the last several months and I have a few more on my list. Although I made most of them for myself, I did manage to squeeze in one for my five-year-old daughter, Babygirl. I used this fabric and trim,

And I used this pattern

The results!

I think she really likes it and besides she looks so cute! I think I will make another coat for her soon.
Peace,

A Very Special Messege

Everyone should have someone in their life who is considered a soul mate, for me its my big sis Rita. She is an awesome person! Not only is smart, kind, energetic, outgoing and funny; she is always there for me. And I love her for that. Whenever I need someone to talk to, laugh with or when I need a shoulder to cry on, she's there. She even gives great advice (although sometimes its unsolicited) Inside joke.

So on this very special day, I would like wish my sister, Rita a...

Happy Birthday!

Make a wish and blow out the candles!
Love Ya,
K.
